The final race of the season brought us to a drenched Brands Hatch, on the Indy circuit; Peter and Nicola Gillatt only needed to finish the race to secure their 3rd position in class 3 of the Britcar Production Cup Championship.

This was to be a night race, so all the cars were fitted with high intensity head and spotlights. The forecast for qualifying and the race was for heavy rain, so it was going to be a real test of the drivers' concentration.

But first, 'Day Qualifying'; this was a session run in daylight (although with the sodden, grey clouds enveloping the track, there wasn't much daylight to be seen), which started at 15:45, immediately followed by 'Night Qualifying' once the stewards deem that it is dark enough. The times from Day Qualifying are used to set the grid for the race.

Peter started the session, Nicola to follow shortly after. The rain was incessant and rivers of water were running across the track. Peter recorded a best time of 1:09.670, good enough for 22nd place, 8th in class; 4 'Invitation' drivers qualifying ahead of Nicola and Peter, so not a fair reflection of their times. Many drivers, including Nicola, improved on their day qualifying time during the night session. Pole position went to Michael Symons in the spectacularly fast class 1 BMW M3.

The 90 minute race started at 16:49 in the pouring rain, again with Peter taking the helm from the start. The safety car was required for the first couple of laps due to the terrible conditions; during the race, it would be required several  more times, due to drivers spinning off, the track even more treacherous than during the qualifying sessions. During one of the safety car stints on lap 28, Peter took the opportunity to pit, and swapped seats with Nicola, who would run to the end of the race.

Despite spinning herself (and managing to get back going), the race finished with Nicola in 17th place, 3rd in class ... but no podium this time due to the 3 Invitation drivers who finished ahead. It may not have been a podium but the result did confirm Nicola and Peter in 3rd place in class 3, an impressive result especially for Nicola in her rookie season.

The class 1 winner was the Intersport Racing M3 of Clarke and Gibson who finished 4 seconds ahead of pole-sitter and fellow M3-driver, Michael Symons.

We now look forward to next season; full details of our plans will be published as soon as they are finalised.

As I write this on Sunday morning, the clouds have long since dissipated and the sun is shining, although a raw wind is reminding us that it is late November. The season started at a sun-drenched Silverstone back in March and as we leave Brands, the sunglasses are once again required...

What our customers say about us...

The car was always prepared to an excellent standard, the set up MGA provided in the paddock was second to none and made going racing very enjoyable. I learnt more in that one season than any other in motor racing thanks to Mike and the Team at MGA Motorsport.
