SILVERSTONE - Saturday, 11 May

A welcome return for the MGA Motorsport team to Silverstone, the home of British motorsport, but this time, the Britcar event is taking place on the International circuit, the southern loop of the famous Grand Prix track which includes the Hangar Straight. This 1.851 mile circuit is ideal to stretch the legs of the MGA MX5s.

Out this weekend is the white MX5 of Nicola Gillatt and MGA team boss, Mike Gorton, no stranger to Silverstone. Joining them is the familiar red MX5 of Ryan Cefferty, joined by his new team partner, Dave Whitmore, who are looking to improve on their impressive 3rd place last time out, at Donington.
A Friday practice session at the circuit yielded useful time in the cars for all the drivers, setting them up for a busy Saturday, which was to consist of a 9am qualifying session and two 45-minute races.
Saturday dawned cold, dull and breezy, rain promised for later in the day. It wasn't lost on us that the last time we were at Silverstone, in March last year, the sun was shining all weekend and the temperature was in the high 60s, perfect racing weather. A wet track would offer plenty for the spectators though!
Qualifying was fairly uneventful, with the Seat Supercopa of Johnson and Robinson taking pole position, and class 2 honours, in the Production Cup Championship. The leading car in the Britcar series that MGA competes in, the Production Sportscar Series, was Rich Bennett in his Class 1 Porsche 993. In Class 3, Chrissy Palmer lead the charge in his MX5, with Ryan and Dave in 5th place (24th overall) and Mike and Nicola in 6th (26th overall).
Race 1 was somewhat unusual in that both the Production Cup Championship and the Production Sportscar Series started at the same time, but after 45 minutes, the Sportscars race was run, whilst the Cup racers would continue on for a further 45 minutes.
Racing started at 11:45 on a dry track, with a rolling start. Mayhem ensued almost straight away with four cars spinning off and severe damage done to two of them. The MGA cars managed to keep out of trouble, although Ryan was hit on the offside when another competitor attempted an ill-judged overtake, under yellow flags. Fortunately, the damage was minor and didn't affect the race. Ryan and Dave finished in an excellent third place, behind the MX5 of Chrissy Palmer who won and the Class 1 Porsche 944 of Alan Broad. Nicola and Mike finished in a respectable 5th place, determined to improve on that in the second race.
The weather deteriorated during the afternoon, bringing with it heavy showers that drenched the track. Race 2 would be for Production Sportscars only, and due to the wet track, two formation laps were called for. Racing got underway shortly after, with Palmer again in pole position. The race was pretty uneventful, with only the greasy track enlivening proceedings, and it finished after 40 minutes (cut short due to Silverstone's 6pm noise curfew), with Palmer winning, Dave and Ryan crossing the finishing line in 3rd place (2nd in Class), yet again. Second place (in the race!) has to be close at hand. Nicola and Mike took the 7th spot (5th in class).
Leaving Silverstone after an excellent weekend's racing, we now look forward to Rockingham on 1 June. We're hoping that it truly will be 'Flaming June'!

What our customers say about us...

Whilst we drivers would like to believe that we achieved every result single-handedly, I would have to say that in most cases we wouldn't have been on the podium without the efforts of Mike and the MGA Team in getting us there.
