ROCKINGHAM: Saturday, 1 June

Flaming June? Not quite, but at least this race weekend at Rockingham, unlike the two previous ones at Donington and Silverstone, is forecast to be dry.
MGA rolled into Rockingham on Friday for a very useful test day, which yielded valuable data for the weekend's activities. Ryan Cefferty and Dave Whitmore were once again racing in the red MX5 and Nicola Gillatt and MGA team boss Mike Gorton were racing in the white MX5.
The other white MX5, belonging to series organisers Britcar, and run by MGA, was also in attendance. This would only be seen on the track for the practice stint as it's currently for hire.
The race would take place on Rockingham's International Super Sportscar Long Circuit (catchy name!), a 2.0499 mile circuit that uses a stretch of the circuit's famous oval along with a twisty inner section. The timetable consisted of a 30 minute practice session, a 45 minute qualifying session and a 90 minute race. The Production Cup and Production Sportscars (the series that MGA enter) were to race the full 90 minutes together, followed by a 3 hour race for the Endurance Championship drivers.
The practice session went well, with all 4 drivers getting valuable track time, ready for the qualifying session, which started at 10.30am. Mixing the two series up meant that the lap times for the front runners would be several seconds quicker than our Class 4 cars.
And so it was, with the Seat Super Copa of Johnson and Robinson setting the pace with a blistering 1:32.289. In Class 4, the Lohen-ran Mini of Wright and Magly set a 1:37.348 to lead the class, with Ryan and Dave second in class with a 1:43.365 and Nicola and Mike fourth in class with a 1:44.025.
And so to the race. Temperatures had increased throughout the day and by 1pm, were very pleasant although it was still overcast with sunny intervals (said in the best weather forecaster's voice). The 19 cars lined up behind the safety car for the rolling start, an impressive sight on Rockingham's long straight. The race got underway at 13:09, as several thousand horsepower thundered down the straight.
Unfortunately for the grid polesitters, Johnson and Robinson, they couldn't convert the pole into a race win, failing to finish the race, out on lap 15. The win went to the Class 1 car of Mark Cunningham, who had started in second place.
In Class 4, the Wright/Magly Mini won finishing 7th overall. Impressively, MGA drivers finished 2nd and 3rd! Nicola and Mike took the 3rd spot, narrowly beaten by Dave and Ryan who enjoyed their third visit to the podium this season. Performances are increasing every race meeting and we fully expect to see an MGA driver on the top step before the season is over!
A fantastic result for the MGA team, for Mike, Nicola and Ryan and in particular for Dave, who celebrated his birthday today. Congratulations Dave!
And so to Thruxton on the 21st July; we're really looking forward to this race! Our door is always open so pop in if you're passing by.

What our customers say about us...

Whilst we drivers would like to believe that we achieved every result single-handedly, I would have to say that in most cases we wouldn't have been on the podium without the efforts of Mike and the MGA Team in getting us there.
