MSVT Trackday Trophy

18th-21st April 2014

The MSVT Trackday Trophy season commenced this weekend, destination Oulton Park in Cheshire. MGA welcomed novice driver, Nick De-Jesus in his BMW 318 Compact. As the championship enables novice racers to enter into the motor racing world, where better to start his racing career!

MGA's big yellow truck rolled up on Thursday night ready for testing on Friday. This gave De-Jesus an opportunity to get a feel for both the car and circuit - then a chance to look at video footage and lap times once back in. Mike was able to offer Nick advice as regards to racing lines and speed into corners to ensure he was able to perform to his maximum ability. This advice appeared to work! Going out into stint two with a target of 2 minutes 9 seconds (his previous best time set at a 2:12:00). Nick comfortably managed numerous 2:08:00's with the impression that the car could go quicker yet. Having knocked an entire four seconds off his best previous time, both the team and driver were left looking forward to what race day would bring.

Monday 21st April - Race Day
All set for qualifying, after analysing his driving from Friday, Nick impressed the team once again with three laps with a time of 2:07's (his best a 07:4). A very respectable time around Oulton Park international circuit in a BMW 318 Compact, even more so for a novice! Enduring an interesting battle with a BMW E30 - one of seven cars in our class - driven by Brent-Smith and Lyons, which we fortunately won. This enabled Nick to really learn some racing tactics - something a track day may not be able to offer. Qualifying 1st in class, with a two second lead on the car behind left us set for a very interesting race indeed!

Due to complications with the VW cup race before the Trackday Trophy one, the race was decreased from 45 to 30 minutes. This meant that Nick would have to get on the pace quickly. As the race commenced at 14:40 Nick was unable to get a decent start due to low visibility caused by traffic in front, consequently losing two places though the MGA team still had faith! Once again there was some close racing between our BMW Compact and the E30, this time also with another car in class, a Fiat Punto Abarth driven by Billingsley.

As the pit window opened 10 minutes into the race the team had a 15 minute slot to bring in the driver when desired for a 2 minute pit stop - giving the team time to check tyre pressures and encourage the driver to stay consistent with his pace. Nick returned to the track 3rd in class although the two cars ahead had not yet pitted. As the race drew to an end the battle for first and second position in class appeared extremely close between De-Jesus and the E30. As our driver overtook the E30 on the start/finish line the red flag was put out with 10 minutes to go, leaving the team unsure as to whether we'd secured 1st or 2nd in class. This lead to an agonising wait to find out!

After plenty of finger crossing our driver Nick was revealed 1st in Class D and was rewarded with a trophy, a 1st cap and the all important champagne!

The MGA team would like to congratulate Nick De-Jesus on such an achievement in his debut race and now look forward to the BMW's next outing at Rockingham, Saturday 14th May 2014.
