MGA News

After an extremely successful round at Spa, Castle Combe hosted the next round of the Tintop Championship for our Honda Civic.  However due to Ryan Cefferty being unable to attend the round, Mike Gorton dusted off the race boots and took his place instead – co-driving with Dave Whitmore.
Testing took place on Thursday providing Mike with an opportunity to get to grips with the car – his first time in the Civic.  Kicking off the testing Dave was able to deliver lap times of 1 minute 21’s.  Once Mike then took over the steering wheel he spent a few laps ensuring he was familiar with the track before delivering a time of 1 minute 19 on his 4th lap.  With some research, this showed that with a lap time such as this the Honda would have the potential to make 8th place at least.  As the competitiveness between both drivers kicked in Dave took the car out again, performing a lap of 1 minute 20 (his best time of the day).
After a decent test day the pair were optimistic for both qualifying and the race (both happening on Sunday).  As Dave took to the first stint of qualifying he was only able to partake in 2 laps (only one flying lap) before losing control at Quarry and hitting the barrier causing damage to the front left of the car and consequently putting us out of the session.  Post checks, the MGA team were confident that the damage was simply to the body of the car, rather than inflicting any issues mechanically.  Thankfully, this meant the car was able to take part in the race later on that afternoon.  As Mike was unable to qualify, the problem was highligted to the officials who agreed that with his racing history Mike was fit to race.
Due to a poor qualifying session, this meant that the Honda Civic would start the race 19th on the grid out of 34 cars.  This was thanks to the one lap time Dave was able to deliver before his off.  However an unfortunate weekend went from bad to worse as before even being able to complete his first lap of the race, Dave, who again took the first stint, was involved in a serious incident involving a Ford Fiesta and a Nova.  This incident consisted of several nose to tail rolls along the crash barrier before landing on the Ford Fiesta (as seen in the video).  Though shook up and with a slightly tired looking car to say the least, Dave fortunately escaped the car relatively unharmed, with minor injuries to his toes, knee and shoulder.

All in all, with only completing 3 laps combined in both qualifying and race, it’s fair to say MGA have had better weekends!  MGA left Castle Combe with one extremely sore driver and another feeling sorry for himself as he removed his racing gear for the second time that weekend having completed no laps at all!
Now the repair work begins!  As the only panel on the car untouched is the roof, the entire car has been stripped and sent to the body shop for a much needed face lift.  Though the accident has left the Honda with a huge amount of damage, the engine is still fully functional luckily and so are the windscreen wipers – much to Dave’s delight!
Unfortunately the car will not be out for Anglesey due to the lack of time between the two rounds.  However both the MGA team and drivers are optimistic they will return to the championship at Donington on the 30th August.  We look forward to seeing you there.

What our customers say about us...

The car was always prepared to an excellent standard, the set up MGA provided in the paddock was second to none and made going racing very enjoyable. I learnt more in that one season than any other in motor racing thanks to Mike and the Team at MGA Motorsport.
